Barry Newell
Barry Newell joined the Rays in 2017 and was promoted to Vice President, Business Operations & Analytics in 2020. In this role, he leads all business analytics efforts for the club and works collaboratively with each department to enhance its data-driven strategy. Additionally, he has been influential in the organization’s overhaul of its technology strategy, touching internal systems and customer-facing platforms, with the overarching goal of improving the fan experience. In 2018, Newell was instrumental in leading the Rays purchase of the Tampa Bay Rowdies USL soccer franchise, based in St. Petersburg.
Before joining the Rays, he worked as a M&A investment banker in New York City with a primary focus on media and telecommunications. In this role, he partnered with both Fortune 500 and international companies to help them achieve their strategic and financial goals.
Newell graduated from Princeton University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and was a four-year letterman on the Varsity Football team. He also holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, with a focus on marketing and managerial analytics. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council. He lives in Tampa with his partner, Kelly, and their two dogs, Jax and Nala.
