A snapshot of Hillsborough County job postings in May

June 10, 2020

When the Coronavirus pandemic started, one leading indicator to measure the negative impact locally was the decline in the number of job postings.

Using data from Chmura Economics & Analytics, JobsEQ, Hillsborough County saw a steep decline in job postings during March and April. But once Florida started reopening some businesses in late May, there was a rise in job postings.

The Tampa Bay EDC’s market research analyst Robin DiSalvo pulled a report to see how many new job postings went up, which companies are hiring, the types of jobs in demand, and where these job opportunities are located.

On May 19 there was a jump of 1,434 job posts and then 927 more on May 21. The company job postings were scattered throughout Hillsborough County with the majority by companies located near downtown Tampa.

In total, 7,800 employees posted 30,600 active job postings in May for 664 occupations. The top occupations by number of active ads were for retail sales positions and food preparation, followed by sales representatives, software developers, customer service representatives, secondary school teachers and registered nurses.

Nearly 200 businesses in Hillsborough County such as Advance Auto Parts, Kane’s Furniture, and The Home Depot posted available job openings for a retail salesperson. About 180 businesses such as USAA, Moffitt Cancer Center and ReliaQuest posted available job openings for software developers.
