German medical device company establishes U.S. headquarters in Tampa

Medability has leased 1,600 square feet in downtown Tampa and plans to create 12 jobs over the next three years

Tampa, Fla. (January 29, 2025) – Medability GmbH, a leading Germany-based medical technology company, has announced its decision to establish its U.S. headquarters in Tampa, Fla. This milestone marks a significant step in Medability’s global expansion strategy, aimed at strengthening its presence in the United States to better serve its growing customer base.

The move underscores Medability’s commitment to leveraging Tampa’s thriving life sciences ecosystem, which offers a dynamic environment for innovation and collaboration in the medical technology sector. By choosing Tampa, the company positions itself to access key partnerships and resources while contributing to the region’s burgeoning reputation as a hub for healthcare innovation.

The new office is situated in the heart of Tampa’s downtown at 1000 N. Ashley Dr. and within the Tampa Medical & Research District (TMRD). Medability has leased 1,600 square feet and plans to create 12 new jobs over the next three years in roles such as technical and software engineering, business development and marketing.

“Establishing our U.S. headquarters in Tampa is an exciting milestone for Medability as we expand our global presence,” said Dr. Patrick Wucherer, CEO of Medability GmbH. “The United States represents a critical market for our innovative surgical simulators, not only to support surgeons in advancing their skills but also to collaborate with the U.S. MedTech industry in showcasing and adopting new surgical technologies. Tampa’s vibrant life sciences ecosystem provides the perfect foundation for us to grow, connect with industry leaders, and contribute to medical innovation. We’re excited to support healthcare professionals and industry partners alike in advancing patient care.”

This project was made possible in partnership with the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council and Select Florida. Joanne LeBlanc with Colliers International assisted with the real estate search and brokered the transaction.

The Tampa Bay Economic Development Council continues to see strong interest from international companies setting up U.S. operations. Medability is the latest foreign direct investment project to select Tampa and Hillsborough County, following Systal Technology Solutions, JSWD Architecture, WellnessLiving and Strive Sales.

“Through strategic, targeted investments, Governor DeSantis has made Florida a more attractive state for life sciences innovation, including the nation’s second largest medical device manufacturing sector,” said Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. “It’s no surprise then that high tech companies from around the world, like Medability, are finding Florida and Medability will make a great addition to the simulation cluster. Wins like these are only made possible because of strong partnerships as in this case with SelectFlorida, FloridaCommerce, the Tampa Bay EDC and USF Health.”

Florida is a leader in the life sciences industry, particularly in the medical device manufacturing sector where it currently ranks second. In Tampa Bay, nearly 1,100 life sciences companies are located here, supporting more than 25,000 jobs. Over the next five years, the health care and life sciences industry is projected to see a growth rate of more than 6% in the Tampa MSA. Additionally, more than 20% of those employed in the life sciences sector in Florida reside in the Tampa MSA.

Tampa is also home to the Tampa Medical and Research District (TMRD), a burgeoning hub of world-class clinical care, academics, research and biotechnology, anchored by Tampa General Hospital and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and in partnership with the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council. USF CAMLS, also located within the TMRD, is a center of excellence for medical learning and simulation. Medability’s choice of Tampa for their U.S. headquarters further solidifies Tampa as a destination for medical training and technology innovations.

“Medability is an excellent addition to our burgeoning Tampa Medical and Research District,”

said Ron Christaldi, Chair of the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council and Shumaker Partner/President and CEO of Shumaker Advisors Florida. “Medical device manufacturing is an important part of our life science industry, and we’re thrilled Medability has chosen to launch its U.S. operations in Tampa.”
