June 14, 2016

Moffitt Cancer Center is one of only 45 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, a distinction that recognizes Moffitt’s excellence in moffit-cancer-centerresearch, as well as its contributions to clinical trials, prevention, and cancer control. The third largest cancer treatment facility in the U.S., Moffitt Cancer Center is the #1 cancer hospital in Florida and has been listed in U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for cancer since 1999. With more than 5,200 employees, Moffitt Cancer Center has an economic impact on the state of more than $2.1 billion.

President and CEO Dr. Alan F. List is internationally recognized for his many contributions in the development of novel, more effective treatment strategies for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). His pioneering work led to the development of lenalidomide (Revlimid®) from the laboratory to clinical trials, which went on to receive fast-track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and approval for the treatment of patients with MDS and multiple myeloma. This work transformed the natural history of MDS from a premalignant condition that progressed to malignancy requiring aggressive treatment to a condition managed in the outpatient setting with oral agents. Prior to his current position, Dr. List served as Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief, the Vice Deputy Physician-in-Chief, and the Chief of the Malignant Hematology Division at Moffitt,

1. Those of us who live here know that Hillsborough County is a great place to live and work. When you are recruiting top talent from out of market, what aspects of our community are often cited as positive factors influencing their decision to relocate here?
Moffitt Cancer Center recruits physicians and scientists from around the world who are drawn to the institution because of our exceptional opportunities in team science and clinical cancer research, and our unique interdisciplinary approach to patient care. Once you get them here to visit, it is an easy sell to win recruits over with our great weather and numerous lively and diverse cultural activities. For me, I was immediately struck by the people of our community; this is the friendliest place I have ever lived. People who come here are willing to get involved in leadership roles in their community, and they want to keep Tampa special, improve it where we can, and position it best for the future.

2. What is your favorite aspect of living in Tampa Bay?
Not only is the weather wonderful, but we have so many recreational opportunities here. Just in downtown Tampa alone, we have our beautiful Riverwalk, which is truly a jewel, and Bayshore Boulevard. My wife and I like to spend our weekends outdoors, riding our bicycles or enjoying the city or countryside on our motorcycles.

3. Where do you derive the most benefit for yourself and your company as an Investor of the EDC?
I am able to meet so many of the leaders of our business community and see how we can help each other. The EDC is supported by some of the biggest names in the community, and it is truly remarkable when we’re able to work together for the greater good of Tampa and Hillsborough County. For Moffitt, we have found synergy with the EDC in seeking to bring new biotech companies to Tampa. This is a huge area of interest for us, and we appreciate the collaborative spirit.

4. How has the EDC played a role in helping your business succeed in Tampa and Hillsborough County?
I have been very impressed with the EDC team. They jump in and get to know their investors, regularly reaching out to understand their strengths and what distinguishes each company. Right now, the EDC is working with Moffitt on research and licensing opportunities with biotech companies, for example. They want to help us connect with the right people, and when successful, bring new companies to Tampa.
