TD Bank is one of the 10 largest banks in the U.S., with over 26,000 employees and deep roots in the community dating back more than 150 years. TD Bank offers a broad array of retail, small business, and commercial banking products and services to more than 8 million customers through its extensive network throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Metro D.C., the Carolinas, and Florida.
As TD Bank’s Market President for Central Florida, Michael Nursey oversees commercial and business banking teams as well as coordinates community and charitable activities within the bank’s Central Florida market, which includes Tampa, Orlando, Lakeland, and Brevard County. While Nursey has 27 years of experience in commercial, corporate, business, and retail banking in Florida, he moved to Tampa in 2014. During his short time here, he has joined the Board of Trustees at the University of Tampa, the Policy Committee at the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, has become involved with the Florida Aquarium and has continued TD Bank’s work as an Executive Committee-level Investor of the EDC.
What makes Tampa and Hillsborough County an ideal place for a corporate headquarters?
Our community is a combination of the best qualities throughout the entire state. We have a vibrant business environment, and people in this community are very welcoming, which I experienced firsthand after moving here last year. Our quality of life is unlike any other. We have it all, from a vibrant sports community, great beaches, and cultural diversity. We are becoming well known for our restaurants. It is hard to say that there is a better place for a corporate headquarters. People who relocate here always find something because our community has everything.
How has Tampa been an asset for you in recruiting top talent to your organization?
TD Bank is in the middle of this process right now. Our strong business environment has been a top asset. Tampa and Hillsborough County have a lot going on, and talent wants to be in a place like this one. It is also important to have qualified individuals already located here, and we have that; our labor force is strong and talented.
What is Tampa and Hillsborough County’s best kept secret?
Our best kept secret has to be our well-coordinated desire to grow. Our community is truly working together to be better than we were yesterday. There is support from elected officials at all levels, and community assets like Tampa International Airport, Port Tampa Bay, and the downtown area have done the research and are making the appropriate plans to continue to grow.
Where do you derive the most benefit for yourself and your organization as an Investor of the EDC?
As someone who is new to Tampa Bay, I am able to let other Investors know more about TD Bank as well as myself. In return, I get to meet other business leaders. I really appreciate the depth of energy and the level of participation that the EDC Investors have not only in their commitment to the networking, but to making Tampa and Hillsborough County better and stronger.
