Money transfer company hopes to bring 250 jobs to Tampa

November 12, 2015

The money-transfer startup TransferWise has hired 50 people in Tampa and plans to add 200 more jobs as it lays its first roots in the U.S.

The London-based company is setting up its American operations center at 4012 Gunn Highway. It plans to grow the office to 250 people over the next three years.

TransferWise, which was founded in 2011, says it offers low rates on overseas money transfers by bypassing bank fees and wire services.

The company expanded its service into the U.S. in February and has handled about $1 billion in transactions here since, said Michael Goodbody, TransferWise’s U.S. spokesman. The Tampa office will work on routing money and field customer service calls, Goodbody said.

The Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. says the company did not receive any government incentives to start the office. Goodbody said the company was attracted to the region by its experience running operations and call centers.
