Metrohm USA broke ground Friday for a 90,000-square-foot headquarters in Riverview.

The company, an international producer of precision instruments for chemical analysis, expects to add technical jobs that pay well, a press release said.

Skilled employees and high-paying jobs are considered crucial to economic development and growth in Hillsborough County and throughout Florida.

Metrohm USA has outgrown its 55,000-square-foot facility at 6555 Pelican Creek Circle, where it employs more than 100 people. It will move all its operations to the new facility at 9250 Camden Field Parkway when the new building is completed in early 2018.

“We have been located in the Tampa Bay area since 2009 and feel that its proximity to major transportation hubs and the source of talent created by the many major colleges will continue to help us achieve our goals,”  Edward Colihan, president and CEO of Metrohm USA, said in the press release.

The company is growing its employee base by about 5 percent a year, said Ev Bosque, chief financial officer, during a Dec. 13 appearance before the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. The Land Use Commission approved a modification that allowed the project to move forward.

The company initially relocated from New York to its leased office on Pelican Creek Circle about eight years ago, when it received incentives from the state and county, Bosque said.

For the current expansion, the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. helped Metrohm USA with connections to CareerSource Tampa Bay, as well as Hillsborough County for expedited permitting and impact fee estimates.

Metrohm USA is part of the Metrohm AG, based in Herisau, Switzerland. The parent company operates in more than 80 countries.
