The Driving Force Behind the State’s Fast-Growing Life Sciences Sector

Over the past decade, Tampa Bay has positioned itself as a leader in the healthcare and life sciences industry as major corporations have located their operations, R&D, and manufacturing to the region. These companies are drawn to Tampa Bay because of the market’s talented workforce, strong research university presence, and collaborative community.

We are home to the Tampa Medical & Research District (TMRD) – anchored by Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the University of South Florida (USF) Health Morsani College of Medicine—which together form one of the largest academic healthcare systems in the United States. The TMRD is a robust and inclusive healthcare and life sciences ecosystem that attracts highly respected clinicians, scientists, educators and investors to Tampa. To learn more about the TMRD, visit the new website at www.tmrdfl.org.

More than 20% of those employed in the life sciences sectors in Florida reside in the Tampa MSA. Over the next five years, the health care and life sciences industry is projected to see a growth rate of more than 6% in the Tampa MSA.

In recent years, globally renowned corporations Bristol Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, Amgen, and Pfizer have chosen Hillsborough County as sites for major North American operations. Tampa has also attracted medical research and life sciences companies like Axogen, Bausch & Lomb Pharmaceuticals, and Verséa Health, which are producing innovative solutions and developing effective treatments for various diseases.
