Where are new Hillsborough County residents moving from?

More than 43,000 residents moved into Hillsborough County from a different state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau 2016-2020 American Community Survey (ACS) County-to-County 5-Year Migration Inflow.

It’s probably no surprise here, but once again New York was the #1 state from where residents moved, followed by Georgia and Virginia.

Over the past decade, the states that consistently contributed residents to Hillsborough County include New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

New job opportunities, flexible work, a lifestyle change, and being closer to family are just some of the reasons people cited for why they moved.

What is the ACS?

Each year the U.S. Census Bureau releases migration flow tables for selected geography levels based on the ACS 5-year dataset. The migration flow refers to residents moving from one geography to another. County-to-County migration flow estimates have been produced every 5-years beginning with 2005-2009.
