Suncoast Credit Union

From our humble beginning in 1934, when a handful of local educators founded Hillsborough County Teachers Credit Union, Suncoast Credit Union has grown into the largest credit union headquartered in Florida. We were originally formed to meet the financial service needs of teachers in Hillsborough County. A charter amendment in 1953 expanded the field of membership to include Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, DeSoto and Hardee County teachers. By the end of 1957, Manatee, Levy and Sumter Counties were included; Charlotte County was added in 1959. By that time, services had been extended to all school employees — not just teachers.

In 1975, our name was changed to Suncoast Schools Credit Union to better represent our field of membership; it became Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union with conversion to a federal charter in 1978. We continued to grow with the addition of Glades and Hendry Counties in 1982, Collier County in 1983 and Lee County in 1993. Changes in federal field of membership regulations in the 1990s allowed the inclusion of Select Employee Groups (SEGs) in the our field of membership, allowing us to provide services to small employee groups that would not otherwise have access to the advantages of a credit union.




Darlene Johnson

With more than 28 years of credit union and member services experience, Darlene Johnson is the chief operations officer of Suncoast Credit Union. When she began her career at Suncoast Credit Union in 1990, Ms. Johnson began immersing herself in member services and eventually loan underwriting and originations.

 

Ms. Johnson worked in a variety of leadership roles at Suncoast Credit Union such as loan underwriting manager, consumer loan manager, and vice president of loan originations, vice president of member solutions, and senior vice president of member experience before assuming her current position in 2017.

 

Beyond her chief operations officer duties, Ms. Johnson is dedicated to ensuring Suncoast employees are provided continuous development and training opportunities translating into exceptional member experiences. She maintains a primary focus on employees and the service level provided when interacting with their co-workers and members. Ms. Johnson is committed to supporting the Suncoast value of building trusted relationships while providing financial guidance to our members.

 

Ms. Johnson has earned her Certified Credit Union Executive, Certified Lending Specialist, and Credit Union Development Educator designations as well as completed the Credit Union National Association’s Financial Counseling Training.

 

When Ms. Johnson isn’t helping members save more for life, she can be found volunteering with Relay for Life and Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure. She also enjoys spending time with her family at the beach or hanging out at the baseball field.
