Florida ranks #1 in net migration for fifth consecutive year

For the fifth consecutive year, Florida ranks in the number one spot for net migration. According to the most current net migration data from the U.S. Census, Florida saw the largest gain of residents between July 2019 and July 2020 with more than 252,700 new residents. These new stats bring the total daily number of people moving to Florida to 692. Texas followed with 216,949 during the same time period or 594 people per day.

Florida Has the Most Net Migration Gain

Florida’s net migration experienced the most gain at 30,129, followed by Texas with 26,245. California on the other hand saw the biggest loss of residents at -213,510 in 2020, up from -129,386 the previous year for a difference of -84,124. New York followed with a loss of -168,712 in 2020 from -134,896 in 2019 for a difference of -33,816 year-over-year.

Net Migration Rate

A comparison of state-level migration data during the last two years indicates that Sun Belt states Arizona and Florida both maintained double-digit net migration rates while California, Illinois and New York suffered negative rates between -4.4% to -8.7%.
